We wanted to know how Linda’s career path led to Any Lab Test Now. So, we asked!

“I have a master’s degree in blood banking and was the only specialist in this big area around Abilene, Texas. I was working in transfusion services as a supervisor but was only paid to be part-time. That worked for me because I was raising my children, but I became an “empty nester” after my children went on to college and other things. I was down and feeling like I needed to do something different. I requested full-time status, but they refused so I just up and quit.

 

My husband is a physician, and he knew that if I didn’t do something I would end up driving him crazy! And so I started researching franchises. My husband’s background as a business owner has given him perspective on what it takes to own and operate one. But I was more apprehensive and unsure, until I found Any Lab Test Now. I know it sounds silly, but it fit me so well that it felt like divine intervention. With my husband’s background, I knew what the demand for lab testing looks like. I got so excited that it became the only thing I cared about.”

“Yes, I remember the exact moment—it’s when I paid my husband back for all the money that he loaned me to get the business started. It was about three years in when I started seeing the profit beyond break even. We passed that benchmark and money was still coming in. That was exciting!”

 

When you look at the success you have now, can you describe how that feels?

“Okay, first of all, I’ve never needed the money. I have a husband who’s a physician who makes a good living. I’ve always been provided for, and he took care of everything. But he’s been slowing down because he’s close to retiring. It’s such a wonderful feeling to be able to sustain an income. It’s given us such a sense of financial security, and it’s been such a wonderful thing for our family.”

Tell us about the in-store experience at your location?

“The goal is pretty straightforward. For any customer who walks in, we strive to develop a relationship that’s worthy of friendship. When they trust us, we build our reputation in the community. I am beyond honest with them, probably too much, but I will never take advantage of them. I want them to know they can trust me because trust in medicine is everything.”

How have you changed since opening your location?

“I have gained so much self-confidence as a woman, as a person, and as a business owner. I am less risk averse, less frightened of everything. I have to have more overall confidence. I was scared to fail, but the opposite happened. With Any Lab Test Now’s business model, I don’t see anybody failing unless they want to. The entire brand has such a great support mechanism. I got the attention I needed from the very beginning. “

Also, it’s made me more independent. And maybe also a bit prideful because I love what I’ve accomplished and I’m very proud of myself.”

Is there anything else that you think would be important for a prospective franchisee to know?

“Yes. Don’t be afraid. Put that fear away because this thing is going to be successful. There are always factors, right? Your overhead might be higher than mine because I have a cheaper market, but you’re going to meet that overhead really quickly, more quickly than you think. The people I know who are looking at franchises are terrified of not making that return on investment. I tell them that’s just short-term thinking. You’re going to be fine and overcome that barrier. Some of the other concepts may not have as bright a future, but this medical one is a golden opportunity. And, you know, in the beginning, we were afraid that no one would want our services because insurance was going to take over the world. But it’s all worked out fine. Jeri Frandsen started her career with Any Lab Test Now, one of the fastest-growing healthcare franchises in the nation, when she opened her first location in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 2008 with several partners. Following the successful launch of the first unit, the group opened a second storefront in Glendale, Arizona, in 2010. Record sales enabled Frandsen to buy her partners out and add her daughter, Angela Garrett, to her team.

Bringing her daughter onboard was a family tradition and a practical choice. Frandsen began her own career as a real estate broker at her father’s firm. More than 60 percent of businesses are family-owned, according to Family Enterprises USA, a family business advocate in Washington, D.C. “Angie started working for me as an intern. Today she is my business partner and manager of the Scottsdale location,” Frandsen said. “She is motivated. I know she is here for the long term.”

Garrett knew she wanted a career in the medical field from a young age. When she was planning her career path, Garrett discussed her options with her mother. Frandsen promised Garrett a position with Any Lab Test Now if she completed her phlebotomy license. “I grew up with my mom and grandpa working together. Working with my mom was a natural fit,” Garrett added.

Frandsen worked at her father’s real estate business for a number of years before taking a job at an occupational health clinic. Working at the clinic sparked her passion for medicine and fueled her knowledge of lab testing. Searching for warmer temperatures, Frandsen and her parents moved to Arizona, and Frandsen returned to real estate until the economy tanked in 2008. Knowing she was at a crossroads, Frandsen decided to give entrepreneurship a chance. “I always wanted to own my own business. There are high margins in lab testing, and I was familiar with the concept from my time working as a manager at the medical clinic,” Frandsen said.

New Location Fuels Sales, Cuts Costs

Despite recording high sales at the Scottsdale storefront, Frandsen decided to move the location of her business to lower her monthly rent bill. The old storefront was in a strip mall, anchored by a grocery store. The new location is in a quieter shopping plaza across the street, where it is easier for her customers to park, and rent is low. “Our new location saves approximately $2,500 in rent each month. It’s easier for our customers to find and easier to access. The first month at the new location, we had record sales,” Frandsen said.

The mother and daughter are ramping up their presence on social media to help boost sales. Consistent posting on Facebook and LinkedIn is helping generate results. Garrett said they recently started collecting email addresses from customers and plan to distribute an email newsletter to drive repeat business.

Sparkling Service Drives Repeat Business

 Excelling in customer service generates repeat business and high ratings from satisfied customers. Both of the pair’s units focus on customer satisfaction. They pride themselves on being knowledgeable about all of the tests they offer. They make sure to answer every phone call and provide customers with a clean, professional atmosphere. “Our customers want answers fast. Giving them the opportunity to come in and order their own lab work without a doctor’s prescription is a good thing,” Garrett said. “We treat our customers like family.”

Recently, a young mother came in for lab tests to help understand why her child was suffering from nausea, digestive issues and irritability. Frandsen and Garrett recommended a Food Sensitivity and Intolerance Test. To soothe the grouchy baby, the mother was feeding it comfort foods, like almond milk, blue Gatorade and French fries.  One perk of entrepreneurship Garrett did not anticipate was flexibility. Garrett has two children, ages 2 and 10. She is able to coordinate her schedule with her coworker to make sure they can attend school functions and cover sick days. Frandsen makes new staff wait nearly a month before they answer phones to ensure they are able to answer customer questions professionally. Any Lab Test Now Cleveland Ohio Franchisee

Janice Blasinsky is not one to sit around and wait for things to happen. Not in health. Not in business. Not in life. If you caught a glimpse of the 59-year-old Title Boxing at 5:30 a.m. with her daughter/ business partner, you would start to get an idea of her zeal for taking action and making things happen.

Sitting in a doctor’s office in Cleveland, Ohio, back in 2008, Blasinsky recalls asking her doctor for a simple A1c sugar test. She has a family history of diabetes and while she wasn’t experiencing symptoms she wanted to check it out. Her doctor refused to order the lab test, stating her insurance wouldn’t pay for it. For her, that was a problem.

“I was so annoyed. I really didn’t like the fact I couldn’t make my own decisions about monitoring my health,” recalled Blasinsky.

As it happens, she was looking for new business opportunities around that time to add to her existing business – a medical evaluation and claims company.
