How it Started – Launching My Any Lab Test Now Location

We’re always curious as to how our franchisees were first introduced to Any Lab Test Now. Michelle says…

“Before my entrepreneurial journey began, I managed my husband’s surgical practice for 28 years. I’ve been in and around medicine for a long time and was familiar with certain tasks like drawing blood and things of that nature. But eventually, I decided I wanted to own a business myself. And so, I signed up for these franchise notifications that would show up in my inbox. Most didn’t appeal to me, but months later I got a notification from Any Lab Test Now.”

“As I looked into the concept, I was thinking, ‘Oh, I can draw blood. I can do this. It would be perfect for me.’ So, I began the process of looking at the business model and then went to my Discovery Day with the brand. When I first launched my Any Lab Test Now location in San Marcos, I managed the business in the background. On occasion, I would go in and draw blood for drug tests, things like that, especially when somebody had to go on vacation. It was difficult to find the time because I was still managing my husband’s practice, which was a full-time operation.”

How did your Any Lab Test Now location end up moving to a new city?

“My husband and I were approached by the local university in San Marcos – Texas State, as their campus bordered the backyard of our business. They’d been asking us to sell our building to them and, finally, one day they offered enough money to make it worthwhile. My husband really likes to fish, so we moved down to Corpus Christi on the Texas Gulf Coast. But when we moved, I still wanted to have my own job and began the process of opening up a new Any Lab Test Now franchise. It took some time trying to find the right location. At one point, I was looking at 22 locations and a 37-page lease, and it almost became overwhelming. But I ended up finding a great space in a very good location and the business is doing very well. My role now is much more active. I work here, do the blood draws and the drug tests. I get to talk to patients and I’m very hands on – especially running the business side of things.”

“Everybody here is pretty happy and likes to share their story with us. And so, it’s been a great way for me to network with people, because I get professionals, physicians, I get lawyers, I get business owners, I even just had a jewelry maker come in. So, it’s been a really great networking opportunity for me to find friends and meet the community.”

What Aspects of  Your Any Lab Test Now Business Do You Enjoy?

“Number one, I no longer have to deal with insurance. I don’t have to file claims anymore and I love it. To me, it’s like freedom that I’ve never had before. If you’ve ever worked in the insurance field, which I did, it’s time-consuming work. With Any Lab Test Now, patients are free to walk right in. We can explain our straightforward pricing, what they’ll have to pay, and process the lab tests. We then provide the results directly to the patient with a fast turnaround, which is unusual. Some patients that go through their doctor’s office may not get their test results for weeks. I really like this business because our customers are friendly. They aren’t coming to Any Lab Test Now because they have to. They’re coming here because they want to.”


How Any Lab Test Now is Advancing Healthcare Consumerism

Tell us about your thoughts on the rise of healthcare consumerism

“We’re moving towards a health and wellness lifestyle where we’re no longer interested in waiting for the doctor to tell us what they think we should be tested on. I think it was back in 2012 that I attended a Medical Society meeting. We sponsored a dinner for 50 or so physicians and presented the Any Lab Test Now business model as an option for them to handle referrals for us. And they were very upset at the concept of a direct-to-patient lab request, which they saw as stealing their patients. They didn’t like it. We clarified that we’re not taking away their patients, we’re just running the lab. We work in tandem together. But here’s something I do hear from the patients, physicians, and nurses themselves that come into our Any Lab Test Now location. Most of them don’t have insurance – you’d be surprised how many medical people don’t – and they like the idea that they can come in here and get things done discreetly. They appreciate the freedom of choice. They also recognize that when you go through insurance that it’s going to be a higher cost for them. Patients appreciate that they can just walk in here, ask me about certain panels, and order the retail lab tests they need.”


On What the Future Holds…

Are you proud to be an Any Lab Test Now owner?

“Yes, I am. Looking back, I have made my own business. I made my own job. I like that. I just have too many skills to be stuck in a cubicle in an office somewhere. I’m just not going to do that. So, this is my future. Owning an Any Lab Test Now franchise is where I chose to be. I’m blessed. In my eyes, I think everybody dreams of having that job that makes them feel good and fulfilled. And I feel like I have that.”

What does your future look like?

“Eventually, I see me and my husband traveling and doing quite a bit of it. That’s my goal – to see the world. We’ve already done a good deal of it, but right now it’s kind of been halted because of Covid. We want to continue traveling once it becomes safer to be everywhere. That’s it mostly, besides keeping this place going for many, many more years to come – until I decide it’s time to retire.”

How it Started—How it’s Going

We asked Marcee how she found out about Any Lab Test Now…

“Back in May of 2020, I was kind of actively looking for a business to start. My husband Nick and I had always wanted to start our own business, we just didn’t necessarily have an idea in mind. We wanted to own something that we felt really passionately about, and also something that was new to Wichita.

During this time frame, I was looking for some lab testing and wasn’t able to find any pricing online. I also wasn’t able to go anywhere without a doctor’s order, and I just thought–you know–there has to be a better way. I just want to know what I’m going to pay out of pocket. I have insurance, but I have no way of knowing who can tell me what I’m gonna pay. And that was really frustrating for me, because I happen to be a firm believer in pricing transparency. So anyway, I did some research trying to figure this out and it turns out there is an option and it’s called Any Lab Test Now. It was then I noticed that there weren’t any locations in Kansas, but that there were in a lot of other locations all across the country. I thought this could really be my opportunity to bring something unique to Wichita and just fell in love with the concept.”

What’s There to Like About Any Lab Test Now?

What exactly did Marcee find appealing about Any Lab Test Now’s Business Model?

“Any Lab Test Now was attractive due to the variety of services that they offer that focus on customer service. I love good customer service, but it’s so rare these days. I felt like owning an Any Lab Test Now location could be a huge competitive advantage for us, because I knew that I could provide a meaningful customer experience. 

To me, it’s really rewarding when people who are leaving our store stop and say, ‘Wow, that was really fast,’ or ‘You guys are so nice here’. I’m always sure to reply with a thank you and a request to leave us a positive review. You know, people really do appreciate it when you’re willing to spend time on the phone with them, talking through things like what lab tests might be best for them or whether PCR tests are a reliable option when you have an upcoming flight. I’ve found that they truly appreciate that extra time and care in making sure that you’re getting them the answers they need. So, I love that part of it. I love the interactions with the customers. Meeting and even exceeding their expectations is really fun for me.”

 

Why Any Lab Test Now is a Solid Franchise Opportunity…

We asked Marcee about the timing of their decision to open a business just as the pandemic hit. Here’s what she had to say…

“My husband and I had countless conversations about the timing of opening our Any Lab Test Now location. We didn’t want to let the excitement of the business concept cloud the reality of the situation that we found ourselves in at the outset of the pandemic. But taking into account the different scenarios that we ran, we still felt very confident in the overall demand for these services over the long term.

We were willing to take that risk up front. We didn’t want to let something short term, like the pandemic, stop us from moving forward with our dream opportunity. But yes, it was still really scary because we were unsure of that foot traffic. And that was really important to this business because we rely on a lot of walk-ins. But I’m really happy we had the courage to move forward despite the pandemic. In a way, it was terrifying, but if I could go back, I would 100% do it again.”

 

We followed this question up by asking for Marcee’s thoughts on the recession-resistant business model of Any Lab Test Now:

“I will say that I’ve been pleasantly surprised by it, as the first few months beat my expectations. And one critical factor is how I think I underestimated how important people’s health is to them. I think that COVID has even increased that level of attention to our health and that’s a good thing, because there are a lot of common diseases out there that can be prevented. People seem to have a newfound appreciation that life is short and they really take care of this one body they’ve been given.”

 

The Value Proposition of Any Lab Test Now 

How does Marcee describe the value proposition for her customers?

“To me, the real value proposition for my customers is accessible health care. The accessibility is what I see for the people who take an active interest in monitoring their health. They want options. They want transparency and price. When you consider the accessibility for the underserved and those who may not have had access to these services before, I think that’s the true value proposition for the community here. We make it easy for people to get in and out in 10 to 15 minutes, and that’s the true value of accessible health care.”

 

The Future of an Any Lab Test Now Owner

We asked Marcee what she loves about being an Any Lab Test Owner in her community…

“For me, it’s when people come in and say, ‘Oh my goodness, I’m so glad that you guys open–I’ve been wanting to get tested for years.’ And for some of these people who don’t have insurance, they haven’t been to the doctor in years. Many of them haven’t been tested for a single thing, not even the standard lab tests. And they tell me, ‘I finally have an affordable option, where I can just come in and get some key things checked’. That is the most rewarding thing for me. To just give people that accessible way to finally get the lab work that they’ve wanted done forever. It brings out the passion I have for helping people. We’re providing a service that people truly value. And it doesn’t really get more fulfilling than that.”

We’re always curious as to how our franchisees were first introduced to Any Lab Test Now. Richard says…

“Really, my awareness of Any Lab Test Now began back in 2012. James and I were relocating to Texas, where his family was from, and he had taken a job in the Dallas area. I was hired to market a business on behalf of an owner in Houston that had purchased a laboratory. The owner was kind of a serial entrepreneur, and it just so happened that he’d also purchased the rights to an Any Lab Test Now location in the Houston area.

 

In addition to his laboratory, he had a development schedule where every three to four months he was opening an additional Any Lab Test Now location and I was doing the marketing for both. Basically, promoting the Any Lab Test Now locations became a big part of my duties. And so that sort of whetted my appetite, and I began to see myself doing this. Any Lab Test Now is entrepreneurial, something that I’ve always aspired to, and it’s also a laboratory which, fortunately, I’ve spent my career doing. I had previously made the acquaintance of Cecil Peters, a current owner of three stores in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. As it turns out, he was interested in selling his original store location in North Ft. Worth. And so that’s where the adventure began, and it was perfect timing.”

 

What’s There to Like About Any Lab Test Now?

 

What exactly did Richard find appealing about Any Lab Test Now?

“It’s unique, and we get the opportunity to both educate the customer and empower them. They get to learn more about their own health and wellness options, either with us providing the doctor’s order or we accept their physician’s order. It’s rewarding to share how they can order tests and get results on their own, and that the reference laboratories performing our tests are the same trusted labs used by their physicians. We provide them with information, and they can then take it to their doctor for advice if needed. Realistically, I think this is really the future of medicine and healthcare consumerism. I mean, it’s become very clear now, since the pandemic, that this trend is only going to accelerate. Generally speaking, the customers seem very invigorated by it. I’ve had more than a few share how fascinating it is to learn about their options.”

There are thousands of franchise concepts. What makes Any Lab Test Now a desirable choice?

“First, owners don’t need to have a background in healthcare to operate this business model. But I think having a caring, consultative approach is critical. The learning curve can be steep, but you just have to go in with the understanding that customers who come in aren’t initially prepared to order lab tests on their own. The in-store experience, the retail aspect, the consultative orientation, getting all of that right can take some time. The things I love about the business model are the ways we help people with their healthcare choices, educating them on their options, and the business-to-business sales opportunities.”

We wanted to know if Richard planned to retire as an Any Lab Test Now owner…

“Some of us out there are getting to that age where, with some jobs, you might suddenly be aged out. That’s the beauty of Any Lab Test Now. If you’re capable of making your location a successful business, you could run this right on into your golden years. I think that there’s always going to be a role for this business model to play. I do think that down the line, the business model might evolve, but ultimately I think the future is bright.”

How to Begin the Second Act of Your Career

 

We wanted to know how Linda’s career path led to Any Lab Test Now. So, we asked!

“I have a master’s degree in blood banking and was the only specialist in this big area around Abilene, Texas. I was working in transfusion services as a supervisor but was only paid to be part-time. That worked for me because I was raising my children, but I became an “empty nester” after my children went on to college and other things. I was down and feeling like I needed to do something different. I requested full-time status, but they refused so I just up and quit.

 

My husband is a physician, and he knew that if I didn’t do something I would end up driving him crazy! And so I started researching franchises. My husband’s background as a business owner has given him perspective on what it takes to own and operate one. But I was more apprehensive and unsure, until I found Any Lab Test Now. I know it sounds silly, but it fit me so well that it felt like divine intervention. With my husband’s background, I knew what the demand for lab testing looks like. I got so excited that it became the only thing I cared about.”

“Becoming an Any Lab Test Now owner has been an emotional, wonderful thing. It’s made me a different person. I used to be shy, but I became more extroverted. I got out of my comfort zone. I didn’t know much about marketing, but it turned out to be the most wonderful experience I’ve ever had in my life. I just love the overall effect business ownership has had on me. It made me evolve as a person. And at my age, you aren’t sure it’s possible. Now the marketing aspect of the business is my favorite part. I just really enjoy the connection with everybody. It’s not like selling a product, you’re offering your services.”

 

Was there a moment when you realized becoming an Any Lab Test Owner was your calling?

“Yes, I remember the exact moment—it’s when I paid my husband back for all the money that he loaned me to get the business started. It was about three years in when I started seeing the profit beyond break even. We passed that benchmark and money was still coming in. That was exciting!”

 

When you look at the success you have now, can you describe how that feels?

“Okay, first of all, I’ve never needed the money. I have a husband who’s a physician who makes a good living. I’ve always been provided for, and he took care of everything. But he’s been slowing down because he’s close to retiring. It’s such a wonderful feeling to be able to sustain an income. It’s given us such a sense of financial security, and it’s been such a wonderful thing for our family.” 

 

A Day in the Life of an Any Lab Test Now Owner 

 

Tell us about the in-store experience at your location?

“The goal is pretty straightforward. For any customer who walks in, we strive to develop a relationship that’s worthy of friendship. When they trust us, we build our reputation in the community. I am beyond honest with them, probably too much, but I will never take advantage of them. I want them to know they can trust me because trust in medicine is everything.”

 

A Whole New World of Opportunity

 

How have you changed since opening your location?

“I have gained so much self-confidence as a woman, as a person, and as a business owner. I am less risk averse, less frightened of everything. I have to have more overall confidence. I was scared to fail, but the opposite happened. With Any Lab Test Now’s business model, I don’t see anybody failing unless they want to. The entire brand has such a great support mechanism. I got the attention I needed from the very beginning. “

 

Is Any Lab Test Now is a powerful business for women who want to make their mark and do something?

“Oh yes. Any business where you’re doing all this, you’re learning all this, it’s going to help you grow as a woman, as a person. It’s going to put you in some uncomfortable places, but you’ll learn how to handle things. You’re going to have to learn to how to handle a difficult customer, how to keep your employees honest, and how to market against the competition. It helps you grow in so many positive ways. Also, it’s made me more independent. And maybe also a bit prideful because I love what I’ve accomplished and I’m very proud of myself.”

 

Advice Directly From an Any Lab Test Now Owner

 

Is there anything else that you think would be important for a prospective franchisee to know?

“Yes. Don’t be afraid. Put that fear away because this thing is going to be successful. There are always factors, right? Your overhead might be higher than mine because I have a cheaper market, but you’re going to meet that overhead really quickly, more quickly than you think. The people I know who are looking at franchises are terrified of not making that return on investment. I tell them that’s just short-term thinking. You’re going to be fine and overcome that barrier. Some of the other concepts may not have as bright a future, but this medical one is a golden opportunity. And, you know, in the beginning, we were afraid that no one would want our services because insurance was going to take over the world. But it’s all worked out fine. From an owner’s standpoint, Any Lab Test Now seems to be deflation-proof and recession-proof.

Bob Gray, Any Lab Test Now Owner, Sarasota and Venice, FL

Bob Gray, owner of Any Lab Test Now of Sarasota, FL, and Venice, FL. shared his story with us about his passion in the nursing profession. After experiencing high-cost lab tests himself, Bob became a franchisee and quickly set out to help bring about better healthcare options to his local community.

 

Expensive Lab Bills Lead to Business Opportunity

As we got started, we asked Bob how he first heard of Any Lab Test Now.

“I always had a job with extremely good medical benefits, and always had annual visits to my physician with the same annual tests. Three or four years ago I went to my regular physician who ordered the same tests as he always did. I went to the lab, and they took my credit card and I was expecting my usual co-pay to be billed to my card. Then I went back to my physician for a follow-up and my tests came back looking good with no problems.”

“And then I got a bill from the lab, $722 for my lab tests. So, I said no, no, that can’t be right. Last year my copay was $65.00. So, I reach out to them to try to figure out what’s going on. And they told me my insurance denied the claim for my tests. I said no, no, no, I have health care insurance, and all this other stuff went round and round with them repeatedly trying to get my insurance to cover the tests. Then I finally got through to the insurance company, and they said, oh, we no longer have to cover WellCare annually because I wasn’t in the Affordable Care Act and I was on self-pay insurance.”

“So, no one ever told me that I would be liable for this $722 lab bill. The long and short of it, I paid it.

Then, the following year, I went back to my physician again. I told him the story and said this year, I am not going to go through all of these tests which were always normal. I said, you get one or two tests this year for me because I can’t afford $722 again.”

“My doctor said, oh…we need to go to Any Lab Test Now this year. I said, okay, and I go to my local Any Lab Test Now office in Sarasota. They ran my tests and did everything the other lab did the year before, all the same—the bill came to $202.”

“And I said, Okay, I don’t understand how they could do all the same tests for $202. So, I got very interested since I have a medical background myself. I started investigating whether or not franchises were available for the south portion of the county where I lived. And lo and behold, the owner of the Sarasota, Florida office was ready to retire, and I negotiated with him and ended up buying his franchise. Then, eight, nine months later I opened my second location in Venice Florida.”

“I was a prime candidate to learn the ins and outs of this business because of what happened to me. I was also in medical sales and a registered nurse and knew a lot of medical people. Also, I knew that there were an abundance of people out there who have no insurance or had high deductibles and were in the same situation, I was in. So, I felt that I could assist those people much more readily in this capacity, to help bring about even better healthcare in this area.”

 

A Career Military Man Chooses to Continue to Serve His Community

We asked Bob what his background is and what drew him to Any Lab Test Now on a personal level.

“I have an honorable discharge from the Army, Navy and Air Force. I was in all three services; in the Army as an OR Tech, the Navy as a Flight Corpsman for Sub Chasers, and the Air Force as a Flight Nurse and ended my service as a Lieutenant.”

“When I was in the military, I became a Combat Medic Operating Room Technician and later I went to nursing school, got my Registered Nurse License in Michigan, and then became an Operating Room Supervisor. At the same time, I was offered a job in medical sales because I understood the surgical aspect of what companies were looking for. During that time, I got my certification to do critical care nursing, and went into flight nursing, became a high-end Flight Nurse, and traveled all over the world in a Learjet.”

“In 2013, the company I worked for downsized, and I found myself prematurely retired and that is when I came across the Any Lab Test Now opportunity. With my background in medical sales and nursing, it was a perfect fit because I was already comfortable with consultive sales in the medical field. My business approach now is to be a valuable asset to my customers.

 

Being Boss is Fun!

We asked Bob what he enjoyed the most about owning his own business.

“Having the ability to work and do this myself. The thing that is the best is that I don’t have to answer to a boss, I don’t have to get things approved that I want to try or ask if I can do something different. So, having the ability to make a decision where I don’t have to get financial approval from anybody if I believe in it, I’ll do it. Just to be able to do that is very rewarding.”

 

Community Driven Business Model

Bob shared how his business has impacted his local community.

“So, primarily the businesses, our local businesses have utilized us for either pre-employment testing for drugs or work-related injuries and or accidents on the job for drug testing. We enjoy that relationship with them. And when other medical offices close at three o’clock, and somebody has an accident at five o’clock or four o’clock, we can still take them in and take care of their employees.

And those employers, who started using us for COVID testing for their employees, who might come to work with a sniffle or a sore throat or something, they would send them over to us, we’d have them tested, and back to work in an hour. So having the resource for them that we deliver what we tell them we’re going to do is great.”

 

Gratifying Work That Pays Off

We asked Bob if he wakes up every morning saying, “I love my job” and how he feels about his work life and who he works with now as a franchisee and business owner.

“Generally, by the end of the day, when I’ve finished all the tests that we’ve done, I’ve met some great people and, you know, and taking care of their needs and things, that’s when that gratification feels the best.”

“I’ve been very fortunate, the employees that I have, one of them, Sarah, has been with me for two years, she’s an ex-nurse, and offers a very good foundation. She’s run both of my stores and has done very well. My second longest employee, Hannah, has been with me for the last two years. While she was working with me she went to nursing school at night. Now, she finally graduated from nursing school, and she’ll be moving on to the hospital environment as an RN. Then I have another young lady, Melvina, who’s also very experienced, worked for another well-known laboratory for many years, and now she works for us.”

“My employees tell me that number one reason we’re great to work for is because we consider their feelings.”

 

Empowering People to Understand Their Health

We asked Bob what the most unusual thing he’s learned about this business model has been.

“I enjoy the feeling of being able to help somebody with the skills that I have and making a difference for people and giving them something they wouldn’t have gotten in other places. We’re well established and accepted in the community, and we do a lot of testing.”

 

Being in Service to Others

We know nursing is a profession tied to helping and serving others on a very deep level and he responded with some very personal thoughts.

“Nursing, in and of itself, doing the nursing job is not what I do this for what I do it for is I like being close to people. I’m a people person. I like being close to people evaluating their needs and seeing if I can help them. And then, part of it is, I’m a hands-on kind of person and I like doing procedures because there’s a challenge to it. There’s an opportunity throughout the day to feel that you’re making a difference and feel good about what you’re doing. And that’s why I like doing what I do.”

 

Working to Feed Your Soul

As we closed our discussion, we asked Bob what he felt this business did for him on a personal level.

“When I got into this, I was on my third retirement, and because I just not ready to retire, I began looking for something else that I could do where I could make a difference. Where I could feed my soul and my needs and continue to enjoy going to work and everything. So, this business with Any Lab Test Now has given me the opportunity to do exactly that. So, from being in medical sales, working as a nurse, and now to running my Any Lab Test Now location, this has done what I was looking for it to do.”

“If I had to do it all over again I would do it without any hesitation because I like to set goals. I like to measure my value for what I’m doing for people and for myself and for my family and I have been able to attain those things working with Any Lab.”

“We didn’t talk much about what I did just after I was put into an unexpected retirement. In the four years before I became a franchisee, I actually bought and flipped 40 houses. I also have a real estate broker’s license, so I have my own real estate company buying and flipping houses, however, buying and flipping houses is dirty work.”

“This is clean work, I get to go home clean or pretty close to as clean as when I went in. I like this type of clean work, and I use my head, I use my brain more to help people and to problem solve, to make a living. For me, it’s better than pounding a nail and cutting a piece of wood, and so the gratification of my education has paid off for me with this business.”

 

My Son Is Following In My Footsteps Now

We asked Bob if he was happy doing what he’s doing for work today.

“I’ve always said that the best thing I ever did was go to nursing school because for me my entire career, I have utilized and parlayed that education in just about everything. So, it was the best decision I ever made. Now, my son is a Registered Nurse. And so he’s working on becoming a Nurse Practitioner, so he has seen the value of what I’ve been able to accomplish through my career, and he’s following in my footsteps.”

 

The Last Career of Life Should Be Filled With Life’s Passion

Finally, we asked Bob if he felt like this business opportunity was one of the best decisions of his life.

“Yes, it is. Because it has given me the opportunity to, I’ll say, for the last career of my life, my last job to utilize the skills that I have attained throughout my life, put them to work, validate what I feel, how I do things, how I treat people, and how I believe that I can make a difference for our community. So yes, I think that I’ve been extremely pleased with what I’ve done, how I’ve done it, and I’m proud of the current position of our company, our standing in the community, and what we have to offer. And I feel that I have dramatically affected that.”

“This business gives me the opportunity to continue to work with people, and problem solve for people while helping. Then, using my skills that I have, and my hands-on

technical skills it feeds a lot of needs, and I enjoy it. I love my work because I can see that I can make a difference for somebody by getting the right tests in a timely manner, consulting, and helping people.”

Susan Lynch, owner of Any Lab Test Now of Wilmington, NC shared her story with us about how she became a franchisee and what the value is to be recession-proof to those she serves in her local community. For Susan, she found her way to owning her own location by circumstance and a rare opportunity that presented to her at the right time for all the right reasons.

 

One Part-Time Job = One BIG Business Opportunity

We asked Susan how she got her start in the healthcare industry and she said:

“It came to me. I did not go out and find it.  I had taken a part-time job at Any Lab Test Now, here in North Carolina, the one I own now.

At first, I was interested in the business model, because I’ve worked in a clinical lab since I was 20 years old. Over the years, in some capacity or another, I’ve worked in every position from management, all the way down to just drawing blood on the weekends. I was intrigued by the fact that you didn’t need your own doctor’s order. So, I took a part-time job there. And over the years, ended up buying it from the physician who actually started it.”

 

Growing a Career in the Medical Field

Next, we asked, how she got her start in her medical career path and she replied:

“I went to college for phlebotomy and medical assisting and after that I started my technology program, and then got married. I then took a little step back and went to work in the lab. And back then you could do what we used to call “bench work”.

I fell in love with what seemed like a very different kind of job. I have always loved sales and even through my whole medical career, I’ve always sold something on the side.”

 

Combining a Medical Career with a Sales Career

As we talked with Susan, we asked her which career path she liked the most and she said:

“So that piece of this business was a total combination for me. It was the perfect package. The doctor I was working for at this location had come to me and said he was leaving the country for a couple of years. Then he asked me if I wanted to run the lab since I was already here working part-time.  And I said, of course, that would be wonderful. He offered a buy-in so that I would treat it as my own and that option had never entered my mind, you know, being able to own one of these businesses.

It was really perfect because I was now able to sell something I already knew so much about.”

 

Supporting Her Community with an Affordable Choice

Susan also shared her passion behind the value she offers to her community and said:

“Yes, so my biggest driver is that in all the years I’ve been in the hospitals, in the doctor’s offices, one of the biggest complaints is that people can’t afford their medical bills. The doctors say you need to do these tests. And patients say no, I can’t afford the bill. Now, many people don’t get what they need because of money. And I felt like I could offer them an affordable way to get what they need without having to involve their insurance company and get outrageous bills at the end of the sale at the end of the process.”

 

Selling Solutions Is Better Than Selling Big Bills

While we were talking with Susan, we also inquired on what she felt her business value was to her local community and she replied:

“Here’s the reality, people say I’ve got insurance, this test is going to be free. The doctor doesn’t have a financial conversation with them about 90% of the time. The doctors just tell them that this is the test, and they need to go down to the lab.

At what point does it occur to the person that they are going to get an invoice in the mail before they get the invoice in their mailbox? And then at what point does the doctor turn around and say, this is going to cost you X amount of dollars? How do you handle selling that? Because isn’t that really what you’re selling?

For me, I’m selling a solution before the problem actually comes about. Right. And typically, most people have gotten the lab bill for something that was so outrageous, they could not believe that the lab tests could cost that much. Now, they can come to me and find out that they could have many tests done for a fraction of what they paid before.”

 

Painful Insurance Bills Led to Providing the Solution Herself

As we talked, we asked Susan, what is it like to offer a solution ahead of the problem and she responded:

“There’s a lot of people who prefer to pay upfront. Because of that shock in the mail, six weeks after you go to the lab is horrible. I had this happen myself where I let my doctor do my labs one time, I said, “Look, we will try this one time. But if my insurance doesn’t pay, it never happens again.”

I ended up getting a bill. And I told him, “I’m not doing this ever again”. Then my bill was about three times what I would have had to pay here at my store. Most people do not understand how insurance works. They don’t pay attention. They don’t investigate, they don’t call in to check their benefits.

They assume it’s free and they just use it. At the end, a lot of people don’t pay the bill. Now, I’m an easy sell at that point.”

 

A Service-Based Business That Supports Others

At the end of our discussion, we asked Susan to share how she felt about having a business model that’s in service to others and she said:

“Our service is affordable and enjoyable. I mean, we get a lot of reviews about how enjoyable it was to come in and how clean and how fast we are. If you make it enjoyable, and you make it affordable, and your customer service is impeccable… they will just keep coming and people will tell everyone they know, who will tell everyone what options are out there.

It just snowballs from there. Our business model and service give people a place to go that doesn’t feel like a normal medical office where no one cares and you’re just a number. People look at medicine as big business. They think it is all about getting money and no one cares about the patient.

And we just FLIP IT.

We care about the patient and not so much about the money.”

Kenny Peterson and Business Partner Team Up With ANY LAB TEST NOW®

ANY LAB TEST NOW®, is proud to announce the newest addition to their family of franchisees.  Retired NFL player and successful entrepreneur with strong ties to the region, Kenny Peterson and his business partner, Nicole Flores, have been awarded three territories in Northeast Ohio. Kenny and Nicole are planning to open the first of three ANY LAB TEST NOW locations later this year in their hometown of Canton, Ohio.

The ANY LAB TEST NOW concept dates back nearly 30 years. The company was the first to offer consumers walk-in access to lab tests at its flagship location in Atlanta. Today, there are more than 190 locations across the nation and each one, including the future locations in Northeast Ohio, provides thousands of tests without an appointment.

“Our future ANY LAB TEST NOW franchises will fill a huge void in this part of the state,” says Flores, a veteran business leader with a master’s degree in healthcare finance. “Our customers will be able to stop by at their convenience and learn about affordable lab testing. No matter if it is a test to help someone manage a chronic condition like diabetes or a drug test needed for a job applicant at a local business, every test comes with a transparent price, so there are no surprise bills at the end of the process.”
