Cyclospora Infection Test

The Cyclospora Infection Test detects the presence of Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite that can cause intestinal infection.  It is typically contracted by consuming contaminated food or water.  Symptoms of Cyclospora infection include:

  • Frequent and sometimes explosive, watery diarrhea
  • Bloating and excessive gas
  • Nausea and stomach cramps
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite

Symptoms may develop between 2 days and 2 weeks after exposure.  In some cases, these symptoms may improve temporarily and then return.

Because Cyclospora lives in the intestines, this infection cannot be diagnosed with a blood test.  Instead, the Cyclospora Infection Test uses a stool (fecal) specimen.  Your Any Lab Test Now location will provide you with instructions and specimen collection supplies to take home.  After collecting your specimen(s), simply return them to the store for shipment to the laboratory.  Results are typically available within 48 to 72 hours.

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER THIS TEST?

The Cyclospora Infection Test should be considered if you have had symptoms like those below that have not resolved on their own after several days.

  • Frequent and sometimes explosive, watery diarrhea
  • Bloating and excessive gas
  • Nausea and stomach cramps
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite

Some people may also experience vomiting, body aches, or a low grade fever.  However, these symptoms are less common.

HOW DOES THIS TEST WORK?

You will collect a stool sample at home using the instructions and collection supplies provided by your Any Lab Test Now location.  After collecting your specimen(s), simply return them to the store for shipment to the laboratory.  

WHAT KIND OF SAMPLE IS REQUIRED?

This test requires a self-collected stool sample.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO PREPARE?

No special preparation is required.  However, you should drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, particularly if you are experiencing frequent diarrhea. 

IS A DOCTOR’S ORDER REQUIRED?

No.  At Any Lab Test Now, we can accept your doctor’s order or we can provide the doctor’s order for you at no additional cost.

DO I NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

No.  You can walk in for same-day testing.  We make it easy by offering work-friendly store hours.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET MY RESULT?
Results are typically available within 48 to 72 hours after the laboratory receives your specimen.  Please note that turnaround times are estimates only.  Results may take up to two weeks during periods of high demand.
WHAT DOES MY RESULT MEAN?

Your results will report one of two findings:

  • Detected:  “Detected” means that the Cyclospora parasite was detected in your stool sample, and that you should seek guidance from your healthcare provider or a telehealth professional.  DialCare Telehealth Services can review your test results with you and prescribe medication, if appropriate.  The consultation fee is $60.00.
  • Not Detected: “Not Detected” means the Cyclospora parasite was not detected in your stool sample.  However, other infections and diseases can cause similar gastrointestinal symptoms.  If you receive a result of “Not Detected” and are continuing to experience symptoms, you should consult with your healthcare provider.  Additional follow-up testing may be recommended.
