Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) with Calcium Test
Your parathyroid glands are two pairs of small, pea-sized glands located in your neck on either side of your thyroid gland. The role of your parathyroid glands is to produce parathyroid hormone (PTH), which is responsible for regulating calcium levels in your body.
The Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) with Calcium Test is a simple way to evaluate your parathyroid function and determine if your body is balancing calcium levels appropriately. With normal parathyroid function, low blood calcium levels cause your parathyroid glands to release parathyroid hormone. This tells your kidneys to begin reabsorbing calcium, rather than filtering it out of your bloodstream and into your urine. Symptoms of parathyroid dysfunction may include fatigue, trouble with memory, anxiety or depression, bone or joint pain, abdominal pain, high blood pressure, and kidney stones.
By evaluating both parathyroid hormone and calcium levels together, this test will allow you and your healthcare provider to pinpoint the cause of any symptoms you are experiencing and determine the best treatment plan.
