DOT Breath Alcohol Test (BAT)

The DOT Breath Alcohol Test (BAT) determines a person’s blood alcohol concentration by measuring the amount of alcohol present in their exhaled breath.

This test is recommended for employers testing their employees as part of a DOT-regulated drug-free workplace program.  Positive screen results require a second, confirmatory test.  Additional charges for confirmatory tests apply.

FAQs

WHY DO I NEED THIS TEST?

For Employers and Staffing Agencies:

The DOT Breath Alcohol Test (BAT) is recommended for employers who conduct random and reasonable suspicion testing under a DOT-regulated drug-free workplace program.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO PREPARE?

No special preparation is required. The employee should arrive promptly for their scheduled test as breath alcohol testing is time sensitive.  Failure to appear at the scheduled time may be considered a refusal to test.

IS IT SAFE TO TAKE THIS TEST IF I AM PREGNANT?

Yes.

WILL CERTAIN FOODS/DRINKS MAKE THE TEST APPEAR POSITIVE?

Recent use of mouthwashes or over-the-counter medications that contain alcohol may produce a positive screening test result. Recent consumption of certain foods or drinks like kombucha or energy drinks may also give a positive screening test result. There is a mandatory waiting period of 15-30 minutes between the screening test and the confirmation test. This waiting period allows for any alcohol in the employee’s mouth to dissipate before the confirmation test is administered.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET THE RESULTS?

Breath alcohol test results are available the same day that testing is conducted.
