WHAT IS A PROLACTIN LAB TEST FOR?
Prolactin is a hormone that is released from the pituitary gland into the blood stream. Its function is to stimulate breast development and milk production in women. The levels of prolactin are in very small amounts in men. Normal individuals’ prolactin levels vary in a 24 hour period; the levels usually rise during sleep and peak in the morning.
Women that are pregnant and breastfeeding typically have a high prolactin level as a normal physiologic response.
WHY DO I NEED A PROLACTIN TEST?
Prolactin levels are a good measure if there is a dysfunction within your body. Symptoms that may trigger someone to check their prolactin level include nipple discharge, headaches and visual problems, infertility (male and female), impotence, possible pituitary tumor, prolactinomas and irregular or no menstrual periods.
OTHER RELEVANT TESTS:
