RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) affects approximately 64 million people worldwide each year. In most adults and older children, the symptoms are usually mild and “cold-like”, and can resolve on their own after a few days. In vulnerable individuals, including premature and very young infants, children with chronic lung disease or congenital heart disease, and people who are over age 65, this infection can cause much more serious illness leading to hospitalization or worse.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN IF I HAVE A POSITIVE TEST RESULT?

If you have a positive result for this test, then you are considered to be infected with the virus and presumed to be contagious. Any treatment, if appropriate, would be indicated by your healthcare provider.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN IF I HAVE A NEGATIVE TEST RESULT?

If you have a negative result, and are still symptomatic, there are other causes for respiratory illnesses that could still be considered.

IF I AM INFECTED BUT DON’T HAVE SYMPTOMS, CAN I STILL SPREAD THE VIRUS?

Yes, some people who have been infected with either of these viruses might not display any symptoms (referred to as asymptomatic); however, they can still be contagious and spread the virus to other people.
