The Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT) test measures how long your blood takes to clot in response to an internal injury like damage to a blood vessel.  The longer it takes your blood to clot, the greater your risk of excessive bleeding, even from minor injuries.  Activated partial thromboplastin time is measured in seconds.

This test may provide insight if you are experiencing unexplained bruising or are concerned about having a bleeding disorder.  It is also used to monitor anticoagulant therapy with heparin and to assess liver health.

WHO SHOULD GET THIS TEST?

The Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT) test is useful for any consumer with concerns about unexplained bruising, a possible bleeding disorder, or liver health.  Doctors may request this test prior to scheduled surgical procedures to ensure that patients are not at risk for excessive bleeding.  This test is also important for anyone monitoring anticoagulant therapy with heparin.

WHY IS THIS TEST IMPORTANT?

The process of blood clotting starts with an injury, which creates a domino effect of reactions in your body known as the “coagulation cascade.”  The end result of these reactions is  the formation of a clot at the site of injury that stops you from bleeding.  

This test is important because if blood clots too quickly, you may be at risk for the formation of dangerous blood clots that can lead to a stroke or heart attack.  However, if blood clots too slowly, you may be at risk for excessive bleeding, even from small injuries.  

This test is also particularly important for those taking blood thinners such as heparin, because it helps monitor how well the medication is working by ensuring that your blood is clotting at a safe, controlled rate.

No.  Fasting is not required prior to this test.

No additional preparation is required before taking this test.  However, drinking plenty of water prior to any blood draw procedure is recommended.
