Although there has been a lot of coverage on lead, cadmium, and BPA in toys and other children's products, were you paying attention? Oil Spill’s Long Term Impact on Health |

Don’t breathe a sigh of relief yet; the dangers from the BP Oil Spill are not over. According to BP’s website the well has been sealed, 826,988 barrels of oily liquid have been skimmed from the surface of the water and 265,450 barrels have been removed with surface burns. The spill, possibly the largest to date, caused 300 people to seek medical care due to exposure to the crude oil and the dispersants.

K2, also known as “Spice”, “Genie” or “Zohai”, often sold as incense, is being used legally as a synthetic form of marijuana. John Huffman, a Clemson University professor, designed the chemical to study the effects of marijuana and never intended for it to be smoked, but the instructions for creating the synthetic compound chemically similar to THC made their way onto the internet and it is now being produced by marijuana users and sprayed onto herbs and dried flowers.

Drug use, and especially smoking pot, has always been considered a young person’s issue. This is changing as more baby boomers start using or return to using marijuana for numerous reasons. According to a report from the 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an annual survey sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), among those aged 50 to 59, the rate of past month illicit drug use increased from 2.7 percent in 2002 to 4.6 percent in 2008.

Drug testing is useful in many situations, specifically as employment criteria and in custody cases. The person that we select for a responsible position in our organization or the parent responsible for a child is someone we expect to be drug free and reliable. Unfortunately, rumors abound that there are frequently used medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, and even some medical conditions that can produce false positive results.

If you think that maybe you’re still not quite back to normal the morning after a night of drinking, you could be right! Alcohol leaves the body and isn’t detectable with a breathalyzer within 8 hours of your last drink, but impairment from drinking may persist for hours after the alcohol is gone.
