If you think that maybe you’re still not quite back to normal the morning after a night of drinking, you could be right! Alcohol leaves the body and isn’t detectable with a breathalyzer within 8 hours of your last drink, but impairment from drinking may persist for hours after the alcohol is gone.

New CDC HIV Testing Guidelines Released

According to a report published in the December 15th issue of American Family Physician, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) reviewed and updated the HIV testing guidelines. The CDC is now recommending that all persons aged 13 to 64 gets tested at least once for HIV regardless of risk factors.

Swine Flu on the Rise: New Tests Available

Typically, the seasonal flu is most dangerous for the very young (under 2 years) and the elderly. The Swine Flu has shown to be dangerous to a different population so it could be critical to know which strain you have. The groups identified as the most susceptible to the H1N1 virus include the young, from the ages of 6 months to 24 years, and pregnant women.

Vitamin D deficiency has been recognized recently as a major health issue in the United States. A staggering number of Americans do not get enough vitamin D. According to a study conducted by Dr. Michael Melamed at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine published in the Journal of Pediatrics in August, over 70% of American children are not getting enough vitamin D and the number is higher for older Americans.

Date Rape: Do You Know What to Look For?

Young women are still at a high risk of being assaulted while out with friends at parties and get-togethers even though they are aware of the existence of date rape drugs and know that these could be used on them at anytime. Just knowing that these illegal chemicals exist is not enough, women, their friends and their parents need to become knowledgeable about the range of chemicals available to predators and how to protect themselves.

Cutting Cocaine with Livestock Dewormer

Employers who test for drug use want to prevent employees from coming to work high, but it turns out that testing could save someone’s life. Recent reports show that a livestock dewormer, Levamisole, is used increasingly to cut cocaine. There have been 3 deaths and over 100 illnesses reported by the Drug Enforcement Administration in the past year.

PSA Testing: When is the Right Time to Get Screened?

Just this week new evidence has been released that the PSA screenings conducted since the introduction of the test in the mid-1980s have reduced the mortality caused by prostate cancer by 31% and not the 20% originally reported. The most recent study producing these promising results was conducted by European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer (ERSPC).
